The Importance of Healing the Gut

Healthy Gut

We’ve only recently begun to understand the importance of the gut flora’s role in human health and disease. The gut flora promotes normal gastrointestinal function, provides protection from infection, regulates metabolism and comprises more than 75% of our immune system. Disregarded gut flora has been linked to diseases ranging from autism and depression to autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s, inflammatory bowel disease and type 1 diabetes.

Several components of the modern lifestyle directly contribute to unhealthy gut flora:

  • Antibiotics and other medications like birth control and NSAIDs
  • Diets high in refined carbohydrates, sugar and processed foods
  • Diets low in fermentable fibers
  • Dietary toxins like wheat and industrial seed oils that cause leaky gut
  • Chronic stress
  • Chronic infections

Research over the past two decades has revealed that gut health is critical to overall health, and that an unhealthy gut contributes to a wide range of diseases including diabetes, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, autism spectrum disorder, depression and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Many researchers believe that supporting intestinal health and restoring the integrity of the gut barrier will be one of the most important goals of medicine in the 21st century.

The Spiritual Journey

spiritual-journey 1

The spiritual journey that we will discuss in this post is similar to one of a true hero’s journey. This journey is ultimately the path back to Love, our true essence. When we are consumed by fears of the unknown and fears of the materialistic world, we suffer. This suffering is the result of being stuck in our minds and not living from our hearts. When we let go of the rope of attachment and allow the universe to guide us, we are guided by love which brings us into harmony with the source. The source of all energy, the source of creation or God, God is ever abundant and ever loving, thus when we are with God there is no fear. There is no need for fear because our connection with God allows us to feel cared for no matter what the circumstance, we know everything will be perfect. Finding our spiritual connection can take lifetimes when we are bound by fear, the fear to fully open our hearts to all that is. Only I can give myself the permission to be open to all that is, when I give myself the permission I open to endless possibilities and abundance…

5 Reasons Why You Should Clean Your Tongue

Have you noticed a film or coating on your tongue in the morning?

If so there are some impurities, bacteria’s, dead cells and toxins that your body is taking out, that might affect our health. At night our digestive system remains awake, removing toxins from our body by depositing them onto the surface of our tongue. If we don’t scrape away these toxins, they get reabsorbed by the body and can lead to respiratory difficulties, digestive problems, and a compromised immune system.

That’s why it is important in your Ayurvedic daily routine to include cleaning your tongue on a regular basis, in the morning upon rising, and on an empty stomach.

  1. Halitosis.

The morning breath comes from the bacteria at the back of the tongue, cleaning your tongue daily reduces and removes those toxins that cause the bad smell in your mouth. Bad breath can have a negative impact on a person’s life, relationships, and self-esteem.

  1. Experience properly, the flavors of your food.

The digestion process begins in the mouth, with your tongue. When your taste buds are blocked, the body is not able to recognize the properties, flavors and nutrients of the food. The tongue becomes unable to transmit the right message to your brain, starting a poor digestion process. Tasting your food properly is an essential part of the digestion process.

  1. Improve your digestive health.

Having a proper digestion is considered the foundation of health, according to Ayurveda. Scraping your tongue activates saliva production promoting the agni (the body’s digestive fire), helping the digestion process sending the right messages to your brain.

  1. Boost your immunity.

The tongue is part of the first line of our immune system. The removal of those toxins prevents the body from reabsorbing them, allowing the immune system to work more efficiently.

  1. Good for your dental health.

This practice promotes general tooth and gum health removing the bacteria and toxins responsible for periodontal problems, loss of teeth, plaque build-up, and gum infections.

How to clean your tongue?

A tongue scraper (flat piece of metal that is bent in a “U” shape) is more effective than a toothbrush. Due to the fact that, almost half of our oral bacteria live on the deep surface of our tongue; the scraping action of the tongue scraper reach those places where the toxic tongue coating collects (which can range in color from,
(white, clear, yellow or green).

Scrape your tongue by holding the two ends of the scraper in both hands, sticking out your tongue, and placing the scraper as far back on you tongue as possible with firm but gentle pressure from 5 to 10 repetitions until your tongue feels clean and is free of the coating. This should be done just after brushing/flossing and finally the mouth should be rinsed thoroughly with warm water.

A Journey of Self Discovery

We begin our journey with Life In Harmony this week and i am very pleased to find that the we are clearly on our path. The universe has given us the wink and thumbs up to move forward here in Cape Cod, the birth place of Life In Harmony. As we begin our journey we can feel that if we truly stay open and accepting of what appears before us, we are free. Free to create, free to dance, free to love from the depths of our beings and free to move forward on our Journey of Self Discovery. For it is only when we give up the struggle, surrender our defensive position and open to our true nature “Love” that we become free. This monumental first step in our journey takes courage but if we trust in all that is, we will soon find that it is from the place of faith that we find the greatest sense of peace. To quote Thucydides “The bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike, and yet notwithstanding go out to meet it.”
